RESOLUTION BY THE NATIVE AMERICAN CAUCUS
April 20, 2005
Tribal Chairman Floyd Jourdain, Jr.
And Members of the Red Lake Tribal Council
RED LAKE BAND OF CHIPPEWA INDIAN NATION
P.O. Box 550
Red Lake, Minnesota 56671
Dear Chairman Jourdain and Members of the Tribal Council:
We learned with profound sadness the unfortunate and tragic events that took place on the reservation of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians and we extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to you, the victims and the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy.
Such a tragedy represents a great loss and is profoundly felt throughout Indian Country, but such events also provide the opportunity to assist one another and to that end, the Native American Caucus of the California Democratic Party has voted to create an annual scholarship for Red Lake youth. We would like to work with you to establish the criteria, but the basic provisions would be to create two $500 scholarships to be awarded for the next 5 years to one male and one female student.
As our children are among our most precious resources and represent the future of our peoples, we must work together to care for and protect them.
The Native American Caucus is made up of tribal members from throughout California who come together to work on behalf of tribal communities; and we want to extend our support to you as our brothers and sisters through this scholarship program.
Please advise on how best to proceed in working with you and the best contact person to coordinate with us. You can reach Native American Caucus representative Corrine Hicks at 213-202-3970.
Respectfully,
Helen L. Doherty, Caucus Chair
